The Canfield Local School District is taking a proactive step towards promoting student health and wellness. The Board of Education unanimously passed a Drug Testing Policy on July 17, 2019, that will be implemented for the 2019-2020 school year.
During the Strategic Planning Sessions that took place in 2017, one of the goals established was to “Develop a plan that includes a prevention and intervention of substance abuse in grades k-12.” As a result, a Drug and Alcohol Subcommittee was created and recommended to the School Board that student drivers, high school student athletes and marching band participants be drug tested. The committee further recommended that a non-punitive opportunity, as well as an “opt-in” option for grades K-12, be included in the policy. Alex Geordan, Superintendent says, “We are focusing on helping kids. We are the only local district, that we know of, allowing youngsters a non-punitive self-referral option.”
There will be a Community Forum on August 1, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at Canfield High School where the policy will be discussed and community members will have an opportunity to ask questions.
