Pumpkin Math Comes to C.H. Campbell

Kindergarten students at C.H. Campbell learned there’s more to pumpkins than meets the eye. The students have been using the seasonal favorite to learn essential math concepts such as 2D shapes, counting by ones and tens, and nonstandard units of measurement. Parent volunteers facilitated the entire activity, while teachers rotated among groups questioning and observing. Students measured the width with links and the height with unifix cubes. The students got to choose which shapes the parents would carve the eyes, nose, and mouth. The children and parents were then treated to donuts. Cara Bartell, teacher, says “We wanted to take the math concepts and skills we've been learning inside of the classroom and apply them to a relevant and fun Halloween learning activity.” Canfield Superintendent, Alex Geordan made a special guest appearance to read Spookley the Square Pumpkin. The children are sure to remember this fun-filled learning activity for years to come!
